The statement was bold and solemn, and he looked at the Director with a straight face. His body was firm, and his eyes were unwavering. Tension released from his body as he continued the confrontation and stare-down with his boss.

“Do it yourself. There is a fine line between working and asininity, and this is definitely the latter. I have worked for almost 3 months straight with no break, Hope. Alyssa has not been here, either. This is not fair to me nor any of the people I am friends with. Do it yourself.” He started for the office door.

“I am taking my vacation, whether you like it or not.”

That was what Hope had been waiting to hear. It was all well and good being the highest up on the hierarchy, but then no one ever had any sort of backbone, nor did they attempt to voice their honest opinions.

He smiled and crossed his arms, pleased that his friend had reacted in such a way.

“Took you long enough to say it. Enjoy your time off Raines, you’ve earned it. And thank you for working so diligently while I was away, I really appreciate it.”

She slammed the form on his desk and shoved the pen in his hand. "Not so hard to do on your own, is it?" she glanced at his surprised face, perhaps she came on too strongly but she didn't care. "Perhaps you have other people you can assign such tasks to and allow your co-workers a little time off in rotation. Not so hard."

Normally, Hope was fairly easy to get along with and it was difficult to irritate him. However, this woman —who hadn’t even told him her name— was walking a fine line. Who was she to boss him around? Did no one understand that he had a fair amount of work to do as well, and that was why he was rarely present?

The surprise faded off his face, now visibly annoyed. He placed the pen back down on the desk and stood up from his chair, towering over her.

“I appreciate your concern for my co-workers and colleagues, but I do believe you’ve no say in the matter, ma’am. Now, I’ll have to ask you to leave, for as you can see, I’m quite busy. If you’ve still got matters to discuss with me, you’ll have to book an appointment with my secretary.”
